Boys Brigade & Girls Association News

As we approach the end of another BB session we are preparing for our Awards and Display evening at Stowmarket URC on 3rd July at 6.15pm. Everyone is welcome to come

and see what we have been doing this year and to congratulate those receiving awards.

Julie and Dave Francis are stepping down this summer after almost
15 years service with BB.
Dave has done many roles over that time including working with
Anchors and Company Section.
He is a willing washer-upper and writer of quizzes and one of those essential members of any team who quietly gets on with pretty much anything that you ask him to do.
Julie has been my unofficial ‘second in command’ and has been a fantastic support to me as

Captain for many years. Julie also manages the BB Hall bookings and a signatory on the bank account. She is far more organised than I am and I hope to be a bit more like her one

day! I would like to extend my personal thanks and appreciation to them both.

We do have some very specific needs for BB and ask for prayer and personal consideration

if you are able to contribute – note that this does not necessarily require you to be at the coal face running the weekly sessions as we also need people to do the admin/support

roles which are just as vital to keeping BB running smoothly.

The roles are:

· BB Hall admin. Taking bookings, deposits, issuing invoices and keeping track of all

aspects of managing the hall.

· Juniors (ages 8-11) needs a minimum of 1 and ideally 2 additional helpers from September on Wednesday evenings from 6.15-7.30pm. Ideally at least one helper needs to be

female.

· Treasurer. To manage income/outgoings and report to the Captain.

· Taking the register and subs payments on Weds evenings as members arrive.

The usual process for safer recruitment will apply to any roles where contact with children or

young people is required.

If you are able to help in any please speak to Revd. Robert, speak to me on 3rd July or

email bb1stmidsuffolk@yahoo.co.uk

I look forwarding to seeing you at Awards and Display evening.

Additional News - Sponsored All Night Dance Session & BBGA

Awards & Display Evening:

The Company section were delighted that they raised £500.00 with their

sponsored all night dance session. They are very grateful to the friends from

Church who sponsored them so generously and say a big “Thank You“ to

them. The money will be used on the weekend of June 27th to off-set the

cost of the weekend camp at Bawdsey, which they are all very excited about.

On Wednesday, July 3rd there will be a B.B.G.A. display in the Church starting at 6.30pm,

to which you are all invited. The youngsters will be given their awards and badges during

the evening, which will last about an hour. There will be refreshments afterwards in the foyer. Please support the youngsters

if you are able to.

Good news

George Burton had a wonderful day at the garden party at Buckingham Place on May 8th, representing the Boys Brigade as a steward for the guests attending the event.

George shook hands with the Duke of Edinburgh and saw other members of the Royal family as well as many guests.

It was a glorious sunny day.

1st Mid Suffolk BBGA and band took part in Stowmarket carnival parade on 15th July. The carnival theme was 'Stowmarket past present and future' so we went with 'back to the future',  stuck a cardboard delorian on the minibus roof and created a number of tableaux behind the minibus to represent the history (and future) of Boys Brigade in Stowmarket. See you on Mars in 2099

1st Mid Suffolk Boys Brigade and Girls Association has been part of the landscape in Stowmarket since 1891 and continues to be an active part of Stowmarket URC today with 35 young people aged from 5 to 18 plus 10 adult leaders.

Due to leader changes we need more help to run the BB company ranging from helping to plan and run our weekly sessions to admin, accounts, managing the minibus, prayer, Duke of Edinburgh award and planning camps and outings. Registration with BB HQ will be required which is a straightforward process and includes the usual enhanced DBS checks for working with children and young people.

The BB Hall is used by many different groups and Julie Francis has managed hall bookings for many years. Julie is standing down so we need someone to manage the hall bookings, invoices etc and also to take an active role to manage the building from a maintenance perspective.

If you think you may be able to offer some help or support please contact BB Captain Martin Gray via email bb1stmidsuffolk@yahoo.co.uk or speak to Robert Sheard / Brian Hewitt in the first instance.

Boys Brigade leaders hijacked the minibus and had a relaxing evening eating fish and chips at the seaside to celebrate the end of another session. Lots of chat and laughter and some of us even had a swim or a paddle.

PRESIDENT’S COMMENDATIONS

On Sunday 9th July 2023 Boys Brigade Vice-President Ian Rumbelow awarded commendations to George and Alfie Burton at the Stowmarket United Reformed Church morning service.

These awards are authorised personally by the Brigade President and are designed to recognise young people who have shown courage and strength through a period of adversity, maybe as the result of ill health of having dealt with a difficult or challenging situation.

George has attended Boys Brigade for 10 years and faced a number of personal and health challenges. George loves the stability of Boys Brigade and the non-judgemental way he has been accepted since the beginning.

Despite all of his challenges George has been one of our most loyal and regular members and has taken a full part in the programme over the past 10 years, has attended many camps and completed a Bronze Duke of Edinburgh volunteering section and 2 day expedition.

Alfie has constantly been there to support George and he is an experienced drummer in the Boys Brigade band who is now teaching new recruits how to play.

They both help to care for their youngest brother who lives away from home as he needs care 24/7. And if there was a commendation for parenting then their parents Simon and Marie would also receive an award as they are remarkable in the way that they love and support all three of their boys.

Congratulations George and Alfie on receiving your Presidents Commendations.
